Description

HUNSTERSON C.P. (Off) HUNSTERSON ROAD SJ 74 NW 5/41 Church of St John 12.1.67 GV II Church. Dated 1837. By E.Lapidge. Yellow sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Undifferentiated nave and chancel with a vestry to the north-east and a western porch. Western end: Chamfered plinth common to the whole building gabled porch to lower body with a pointed arch with hood-mould and floral label-stops. Projecting springers and moulded coping to gable. The datestone which also bears the coat of arms to the Delves-Broughton family projects from the apex of the gable. Angle buttresses to the sides of the body of the west front with off-sets and gabled caps. To the centre and projecting into the gable is a triple lancet window with a hood mould and floral label stops. To the centre of the gable is a roundel with a dog's head in relief. Octagonal finials with spires to the corners. Bellcote to summit of gable with gable and arched opening with hood mould and label stops. South side has 4 lancet lights with hood moulds and square label stops with buttresses set between similar to those at the western end. North wall similar save that it has a vestry to the easternmost bay with a double lancet window to its gable end. The eastern end is similar to the western save that there is no porch and the triple lancet falls lower. Cross finial to gable. Listing NGR: SJ7028646291
