Description
Designation was recommended on the basis of the remaining strong influence of the Westminster Estate upon the architectural character of the village, despite some insensitive infill developments and some relatively minor lsoss of character to the former estate buildings. The village contains many examples of the work of John Douglas for the Duke.
The long history of settlement is attested by the motte and bailey castle and the moated site of the original timber framed Dodleston Hall, both ancient monuments.
