Abstract/Summary

Report of a geophysical survey undertaken in 2023 in support of a proposed development at Oak Villa, Widnes centred at NGR SJ 53340 87877. The site is an area of rough pasture south of South Lane, at Barrows Green in Widnes, Cheshire. It is bordered to the north by South Lane, and to the west, south and east by housing of varying density. The survey results have been interpreted as having anomalies related to possible archaeological features, largely in the eastern half of the area. These have proven discontinuous and difficult to interpret, but they are potentially related to cut features (such as ditches) forming enclosures or field systems of unknown date. The survey also detected a former trackway attested on historical maps running east-west through the survey area, a network of field drains in the western part of the area and anomalies, spreads of material and linear trends of uncertain origin.
