Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on a 0.23 hectare parcel of land to the south-west of Radway Green Business Park, centred on NGR 377600 353950, comprising the excavation of thirteen archaeological trenches. Roman features/deposits were recorded including two boundary ditches/enclosure and 14 pits (of which 12 formed a cluster). Pottery recovered indicates a 2nd century AD date. A quern fragment and environmental samples provide evidence of crop processing activity. Environmental evidence indicates that the features were associated with settlement activity and that the local environment comprised wet/rough grassland and woodland. Two post-medieval boundary ditches were exposed in the north of the excavation area, which appeared to respect the Romano-British enclosure, suggesting that its boundaries were visible in the landscape when the post-medieval boundaries were established. The boundaries are not depicted on 19th-century mapping and presumably pre-date these maps. A single further ditch remains undated.
