An archaeological assessment and field visit of land to the north of Dunkirk Way, A5117, Backford Cross, Ellesmere Port, was undertaken in 2024 in support of proposed development. The potential for buried archaeological remains from the medieval is considered to be high, comprising medieval ridge and furrow, township boundaries along the southern and western limits (Capenhurst, Shotwick, Cheshire / Great Sutton, Eastham, Cheshire township boundary, and the Backford, Backford, Cheshire / Great Sutton, Eastham, Cheshire township boundary), a trackway of possible medieval origin, also chance find spots associated with the nearby Capenhurst Moated Site – all of which are of local importance. Similarly, the potential for buried archaeological remains from the post-medieval and modern periods is considered to be high, comprising former hedgerow field boundaries; marl pits; and chance find spots associated with agricultural use.
