Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2023 during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new extension at Millside, King Street. The site lies close to areas of known Roman deposits revealed by previous archaeological excavations. Most recently, work conducted directly north of the proposed development, revealed the remains of brine tanks and wells constructed with timber linings. Roman remains were also recorded during excavations at Poolhead Farm and Kinderton Street, situated adjacent to the site. However, in this case, no archaeological remains or artefacts were uncovered during the works, although a possible glacial rill was identified at the southern end of the site which may relate to a feature interpreted as a palaeo-channel during previous archaeological works further to the north.
