Abstract/Summary
Report of a palaeoecological watching brief was conducted during geotechnical preparatory work (eight boreholes and four test pits) for the proposed new bridge at A533 Winnington Bridge, Barnton, Northwich, CW8 4JZ. The objectives of the Watching Brief were to identify and record any deposits of palaeoecological significance within the borehole and test pits sequences which have potential for further palaeoenvironmental assessment and possible full future analysis including deposits from the Holocene and Pleistocene, pollen, macrofossils, charcoal and micromorphology.
The borehole and test pit records were examined and spatial data representing three types of sedimentary facies was extracted: Holocene and Pleistocene deposits, alluvium from flooding of the River Weaver and the modern ground surface. Deposit models indicate variable depths of alluvial sediments, which may contain Holocene features and areas of organic preservation, subject to recent disturbances.
The spatial data collected from the boreholes and test pits were organised and recorded in a CSV file. This data was then imported into QGIS, where it is stored as an ESRI GIS shapefile.
