Abstract/Summary

Following on from geophysical survey (ECH6671), trial trenching (ECH6672), and production of an environmental statement (ECH6673), an archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2022-2023 during the construction of four new sections of road collectively known as the North West Crewe Package (NWCP), on land east of the A530 Middlewich Road and west of Minshull New Road, in the Leighton area of Crewe. Four historic town boundaries recorded by the Cheshire Historic Environment Record (CHER) are known to exist within the scheme itself, including that of an important hedgerow in the centre of the site. Archaeological monitoring was undertaken to investigate and ascertain the date, form, and function of these boundaries. Monitoring works were undertaken in three discrete areas labelled A, B, and C. No evidence of the historical boundaries known to have previously existed in the area were identified during monitoring. No features or finds of archaeological significance were exposed during these works.
