Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken at Glebe Farm, Middlewich. Of the twelve trenches planned, two were abandoned. The other trenches targeted either a historic boundary (in relation to Ordnance Survey mapping from 1882) or a current boundary. Five possible post-medieval ditches were revealed that likely formed field boundaries within the surrounding field landscape. These findings contribute to developing our knowledge of the field landscape prior to the development of the Trent and Mersey Canal which cuts through the north-eastern field boundaries. They also prove that the site belongs to an area that has been used for agricultural purposes for centuries, possibly dating back to the post-medieval period.
