Abstract/Summary
A watching brief was undertaken in 2022 as part of the refurbishment and extension of BSP House, Station Road, Chester, CH1 3DW, to create 4 self contained flats with parking.
The watching brief revealed an in situ thin cellared area running roughly north-south below the development area. This cellar extended to the standing building to the south and below the current ground surface to the north. The construction material and location suggest this was an early part of the railway and used for storage of goods. Of note were a doorway leading to the east, into the cellar of the adjacent standing building, which had been blocked, and in situ railways tracks, running east-west and aligned with loading tracks seen on the 1974 OS map.
