Abstract/Summary
A metal detecting survey was undertaken in 2022 on land off Viking Way, Congleton. Research shows that the site lies to north of the historic core of Congleton characterised by Post Medieval fieldscapes in the Cheshire Historic Landscape Characterisation Survey.
The survey produced 112 metal artefacts and 3 non metallic finds, the majority of which were Post Medieval in date and represented by iron nails, wire and agricultural implements. Six finds of iron slag and lead were classed as metal working and were predominantly in the north-east of the site. It is very likely that the site had been metal detected a number of times previously, as there was a glaring omission of any coins, buttons or metal types such as gold or silver. There were no discernable patterns of activity identified within the data, however, several clusters of predominantly iron could be found in the south-west of the site and north-east. It was not clear whether these represent areas of activity or later dumps, spread via ploughing.
