Abstract/Summary
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken in 2021 and 2022 at Land South of Coppice Way, Handforth, Wilmslow, Cheshire (NGR SJ 86652 83174), prior to development. Seven trenches were excavated across the proposed development area and were located to target the remains of a potential prehistoric enclosure, two former field boundaries shown on the 1874 1st edition Ordnance Survey map and the potential remains of an early to mid-20th century air raid shelter. Only one trench (trench 7) was observed to contain archaeological remains which comprised the remains of a ditch which could not be excavated because of flooding within the trench, however, it aligned with a field boundary ditch depicted on the 1st Edition 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map (1874) and is therefore presumed to be late 18th or 19th century in date.
