Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was carried out in 2022 on land at Winnington Lane, Northwich, Cheshire CW8 4DU (centred on NGR SJ 64460 74693). During the watching brief it was it was found that the area located approximately 50m to the south-west of Winnington Hall, previously suspected to have been part of the landscaped park or formal gardens shown on historic mapping, has been stripped down to the natural sand prior to the commencement of the current project. In the south-western portion of the development area, a 0.30m deep demolition deposit was observed within the stratigraphy which included broken and pulverised fragments of red brick and lime mortar. The presence of this deposit suggests that any former upstanding archaeological features associated with the landscaped park at Winnington Hall were demolished during an earlier phase of works.
