Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2021. The monitored works covered 2.5 ha, centred on NGR 391924, 374377, at Black Lane, Macclesfield, Cheshire. The archaeological remains recorded are of low significance. The extant wall defining part of the south-east site boundary was the only structure recorded that pre-dated the 20th century. It is likely that this wall enclosed a mill complex in the 19th century. No archaeological cut features or artefacts were revealed and no deposits suitable for environmental sampling were encountered. Excluding the northern fringe, the majority of the site has been heavily disturbed. There is some potential for archaeological remains to exist at deeper depths (greater than 0.4 m below ground level) and in uninvestigated areas of the site.
