Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in April 2021 for land north of Parkgate Industrial Estate, Parkgate Lane, Knutsford, in advance of the creation of a residential development with associated infrastructure. A total of nine trenches were excavated targeting features identified on historic mapping. A site walkover survey was also undertaken. The evaluation identified seven linear features. Four of the linear features correspond with field boundaries first depicted on the 1837 Tithe map, and three linear features are undated but are likely to be modern. Palaeoenvironmental sampling from the evaluation recovered botanical macrofossils representing recent floral growth on disturbed soils. No archaeobotanical remains or evidence for permanent groundwater saturation was identified which could perpetuate anaerobic conditions. Therefore, it is considered that there is little potential for palaeoenvironmental preservation within deposits sampled from the this stage of works.
