Abstract/Summary
Following on previous archaeological evaluations in 2017 (ECH6429/R4063) and 2020 (ECH6930/R4517), a watching brief was carried out at 83-89 Foregate Street, Chester, in October 2020. The watching brief monitored the excavation of eight geotechnical trial pits which were used to establish the depth and nature of the existing floor surfaces and wall footings of the existing buildings on the site. The trial pits were on average 0.3m in diameter and varied between 0.3 and 1.5m deep.Works revealed no archaeological features and a single Roman artefact. All deposits and structures encountered were thought to be modern and associated with the construction of the extant buildings on the site.
