Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in February 2019 within the grounds of Number 17 Welsh Row, Nantwich, Cheshire, CW5 5ED, ahead of proposed redevelopment, including demolition of Number 17. The site of No.17 Welsh Row lies within Archaeological Character Zone 4: Medieval and Post-Medieval Industry, of Nantwich’s Area of Archaeological Importance, and within the town’s Conservation Area. The numerous archaeological investigations within the town of Nantwich over the last forty years have revealed a wealth of archaeological remains dating to the Roman, medieval, and post-medieval periods. Much of this material is preserved beneath or within a deep, often organic, waterlogged deposit which, in places, is more than 3m deep. The field work consisted of a trial pit and auger investigation located towards the south end of the enclosed yard area to the rear of Number 17. At the time of the excavation the premises was operating as a restaurant and, consequently, this was the only accessible location available. Although the results of trial pit were limited, they demonstrate that soil deposits of probable late post-medieval date extend to a depth of at least 0.7m below current ground level. This corroborates the results of previous archaeological investigations close to the site which have demonstrated that significant archaeological deposits can be expected to occur at a depth of approximately 0.7m below current ground level.
