Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in 2019 for an area of land north of Chester Road and east of Plovers Lane, Helsby, in advance of proposed development. The site’s location within Helsby is in a larger area of significant Iron Age/Romano-British remains. The line of the Chester to Wilderspool Roman Road passes within c.100m of the site, with the scheduled promontory fort on Helsby Hill located to the south of this feature. A number of Romano-British finds have also been recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme within the wider 1km study area. The overall archaeological interest in the wider 1km study area appears to date largely to the Iron Age/Romano-British period.
