Source/Archive record SCH8910 - Land off Thomas Street, Congleton, Cheshire, CW12 1QY: Archaeological Assessment

An archaeological assessment and site visit were undertaken in 2017 as part of an outline planning application for the redevelopment for up to 73 dwellings including access and associated infrastructure. The Site lies to the immediate east of Thomas Street, on the northeast edge of Congleton town centre and encompasses 1.47 hectares. On the balance of evidence, the primary archaeological interest at the site is that of the now demolished Albert Mill; upstanding remains of the Jubilee Mill and Empire Mill; and the demolished foundation remains of two rows of terraced housing at Thomas Street and Hatter Street. The mill buildings and the terraced housing are included as areas requiring further investigation within the North West Archaeological Research Framework (NWARF) (Brennand, M. 2007) and as such site specific recommendations have been made for an archaeological evaluation to establish the condition and extent of buried foundation remains of the Albert Mill, as well as a historic building record of the Jubilee Mill and Empire Mill buildings prior to demolition.
