Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment was produced in 2020 at a site proposed for development at Pioneer Park, Midpoint 18, Middlewich (Phase 2). The majority of the site is greenfield farmland and, as such, any remains which may survive should be reasonably intact. An early 20th century building (Site 53) has been identified in the southeast corner of the site. The building is not annotated on any maps nor has it been identified through archival sources. The building is considered to be of negligible/low importance in cultural heritage terms, but it may have removed or truncated any earlier archaeological remains in this location. Trial trenching to the south-east of the site, undertaken in association with the Middlewich Bypass, revealed traces of a ditch which may be of Iron Age/Roman date. Excavations in the wider study area have revealed a concentration of Roman activity to the north and north-east of the site along King’s Street and the Nantwich to Middlewich Roman Roads. Field systems with discreet pockets of industrial activity have been found spreading out from this core area. As such, there is considered to be a medium potential for Roman remains to survive on the site.
