Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2019 at Crown Farm Quarry, Oakmere (centred SJ 57377 69866), as part of a programme of archaeological mitigation during extension of the quarry. The aim was to identify and record any features of archaeological interest exposed during the groundworks, in particular the potential remains of a Roman road projected through the quarry extension areas. The archaeological work was undertaken over 30 days between 7th May and 10th September 2019 and comprised the removal of demolition debris associated with a previous barn, and the archaeological supervision of topsoil and subsoil stripping from a Western and an Eastern Extension Area. The excavation area for this phase of works totalled approximately 5.45ha of land. No archaeological features were identified during any of the groundworks during this phase of the project. In 2018, it was noted that the dearth of archaeological features or finds could be due to agricultural activity known to have taken place until recently within the quarry extension areas, as plough scarring had been observed throughout (WA 2018).
