Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Old Hall Street, Malpas, in 2019, during the demolition of existing buildings and the erection of a new building providing twenty one retirement living apartments. Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during ground reduction works across the proposed footprint of the new building, around the fringes of the site that were designated as car parking areas and during works associated with the excavation of an attenuation tank and crane platform. The archaeological monitoring did not identify any archaeological features, structures or deposits. Investigations in multiple areas of the site meant that the full length of the development area was observed, and had any remains of the Roman Road from Chester to Wroxeter passed through the site they would have been encountered. The watching brief has confirmed that the road is either beneath the modern day B5396 immediately to the west of the site, or perhaps even further to the east or west. The watching brief has also confirmed that the site lies beyond the southern limits of the historical core of Malpas and the Area of Archaeological Potential.
