Abstract/Summary
Archaeological desk-based assessment produced in 2012 for land at Abbey Square, Chester, in advance of proposed re-development of the Grade II* listed buildings, Numbers 10 & 11 Abbey Square, (see also ECH 6742 and ECH6743) For discussion and assessment of the buildings themselves). The overall objective of this assessment was to identify the presence of potential archaeological assets within the area of proposed development.
The site was considered to have high potential to contain multi period archaeological remains, including those of Roman and later date, although the construction of the current buildings are likely to have impacted the survival of remains. Additionally, the ground level in the garden of No. 10 Abbey Square appears to have been reduced, which also may have impacted earlier deposits.
