Source/Archive record SCH8716 - Archaeological Desk-based Assessment: The Queen's School, Chester

Archaeological desk-based assessment undertaken in 2019 in support of a planning application for a proposed sports pitch at The Queen's School in Chester. The school lies just beyond the western confines of the walled city within the Chester Area of Archaeological Importance and Chester Archaeologial Character Zone 53: the Roodee Racecourse. The site also lies within the Chester City Centre conservation Area. This report follows on from a heritage appraisal which considers the impact of development on the historic built environment; this report is concerned with the impact of development of the below-ground archaeological resource. The conclusions of the study are that the development site has the potential to contain buried archaeological remains given that it has not been intensively developed. These remains are thought to primarilly relate to palaeoenvironmental evidence for the extent, course and later silting and reclamation of the River Dee during the Roman and later periods. There is also some potential for the presence of buried remains relating to port structures from the Roman and Medieval periods.
