Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in February 2019 at Upton Heath Primary School, Upton Lane, Upton, CH2 1EB, in advance of the creation of a new classroom. The work was necessary due to the potential of archaeological remains on site, particularly from the Roman and medieval periods. Monitoring of the initial topsoil strip and ground remediation works was undertaken. No significant archaeological features or deposits were exposed. The topsoil was a mid-brown clay loam, approximately 0.6m thick. Topsoil finds included a green, glass marble, two pieces of post medieval building material, a fragment of 18th-19th century black-glazed pottery, a fragment of 17th-18th century mottled ware, and a fragment of 19th century pearl ware. Beneath the topsoil was natural drift geology formed of a pale, orange-yellow clay.
