Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during groundworks at land to the east of Mount View Farm, Malpas. The Watching Brief was implemented because of the potential for archaeological remains on the site. The site lies on the outskirts of the village of Malpas, within an area of open agricultural fields. It sits within the Malpas Area of Archaeological Potential and to the southwest of the Malpas Conservation Area. Research shows there is evidence for potential Prehistoric, Roman and Medieval activity on the site. The village retains much of its medieval layout, with ridge and furrow noted in a field to the south of the site. The archaeological watching brief investigated a ditch feature crossing the site on a north-west/south-east orientation which had previously been identified as a potential medieval boundary (see ECH5713). However, excavation of the ditch recorded two fills containing nineteenth and twentieth century finds. It appeared to link a well north of the site to a pond south of the site and so is likely a drainage ditch.
