Abstract/Summary
In September 2018 Trent & Peak Archaeology was commissioned to carry out an assessment of the existing and potential cultural heritage resource along and surrounding a proposed Scheme of flood-related works along Penketh Whittle Brooks, Penketh, Warrington.
Field observation on the 1st October recorded several areas of an undated brick and stone river training wall along Penketh Brook, at the north-western end of the scheme. These remains could potentially be late nineteenth to early twentieth century in date, and as such could be of local heritage significance. These areas of brickwork and stonework could be subject to direct adverse impacts as a result of the proposed development. Aside from these sections of masonry, it is thought that there is moderate potential for the area of interest to contain below ground archaeological remains dating from all periods. The assessment has also shown that there are two Grade II Listed Building, Penketh Hall and an associated barn which may be subject to indirect adverse impacts as a result of the proposed scheme.
The Environment Agency plan to undertake ground investigation works in advance of any construction work, it is therefore suggested that a watching brief be undertaken in support of this. If significant deposits are encountered then geoarchaeological boreholes may be recommended.
