Abstract/Summary

Between 2016 and 2018, archaeological monitoring of the dismantling of the steps to the City Walls west of the North Gate found evidence for substantial masonry remains most probably associated with the Roman north gate (porta decumana). The remains comprised two walls constructed from large blocks of sandstone laid in regular courses. In addition to the walls, a large pit cut into the bedrock may represent a posthole associated with an earlier, timber gate.
