Abstract/Summary

A desk-based heritage assessment was produced in 2018 for land at Chester Racecoursein advance of proposed development. The land, centred at SJ 40000 66214, lies to the west of Watergate Arch, along with an area bordered on its north side by New Crane Street, also land west of the railway viaduct. No designated heritage assets occur within the site, also there are no locally listed buildings. However, the following are of significance for the site:- - Isolated artefacts dating to the Roman period. - Evidence for the Roman harbour at the Roodee. - Evidence for the medieval port at Chester. - Evidence of seventeenth century land reclamation and occupation. - Evidence for eighteenth and nineteenth century structures, a timber yard, the Cop and activity in the area of the Old Port. - Evidence for Chester's eighteenth century House of Industry and nineteenth century workhouse. - Evidence of eighteenth and nineteenth century domestic occupation along Crane Street, Bodens Court, Paradise Row, Grosvenor Court, Crane Bank and River Lane.
