Abstract/Summary

An archaeological assessment was undertaken in 2018 at The Royals Farm, Whitchurch Road, Aston, CW5 8DJ, and its surrounding fields in advance of proposed development. The assessment area includes the farm as well as seventeen enclosed fields, measuring some 96.185ha. The development proposals include subdivision of the main dwelling, conversion of some outbuildings for accommodation, demolition of other outbuildings and relocation of the farm. The assessment comprised desk-based research and a walkover survey. Features of potential interest withn the development area include a former post medieval homestead; a potential linear earthwork possibly representing a former track/road, possibly leading to the moated site at Newhall; former post medieval field boundaries; post medieval clay extraction pits and placename evidence for a brick kiln; also the post medieval buildings of the farm itself.
