Abstract/Summary

Desk-based assessment undertaken in 2018 at 15, 17 and 19 Newgate Street, Chester, in advance of proposed residential development. Despite significant modern interventions within this area, previous archaeological investigations within close proximity to the proposed development Site indicate that there remains good potential for below ground remains to survive within the Site. The Site is located within Chester Archaeological Character Zone 12 (Newgate Street); this is a key area within the Area of Archaeological Importance indicating the high potential for significant archaeological remains of at least a national level to survive in this area. There is a high potential for buried Roman remains to survive within the area, particularly close to the City Walls where elements of the Roman defence may survive within and close to the present Walls. There is also a high potential for surviving Roman and medieval remains to survive at relatively shallow depths. Numbers 15, 17 and 19 Newgate Street are all Grade II Listed buildings, also, immediately to their east, are the City Walls, which are both Scheduled and Grade I Listed.
