Abstract/Summary

Archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken on February 27th 2018 at Pewterspear Green Road, Warrington, Cheshire (centered SJ 4039 6638), in support of a proposed residential development. Two trenches were excavated with the aim of establishing the presence and condition of a Roman road reputed to traverse the southern portion of the site. The trenching demonstrated that there were no remains associated with the Roman road in this location. Trench 1 contained an undated boundary ditch, which does not correspond to any field boundaries on historic mapping. Trench 2 had a buried soil horizon at a depth of 0.35m below ground level, which was likely buried at the time of the construction of a culvert situated to the south of the trench. There was no activity on site of a date earlier than the Post-Medieval period.
