Abstract/Summary

Archaeological desk based assessment undertaken in 2017 to inform the planning application for a proposed residential development on land off West Street, Crewe (SJ 6892 5608). The study site comprises 6.9ha occupied by extensive 20th century railway works buildings and associated structures. There are no designated or non-designated heritage assets within the study site and the proposed development will have no impact upon any designated heritage assets in the surrounding area. The available archaeological records, combined with the results of the analysis of historical mapping, suggest that there is negligible potential for the site to contain archaeological remains of a prehistoric, Roman or medieval date. The site is likely to have remained in agricultural use through the medieval and post medieval periods, until the construction of the railway works in the early 20th century. The existing modern works buildings that occupy the site are not ‘non-designated heritage assets’ and are considered to be of no more than local significance. The loss of the earliest of these buildings and the wall frontage along West Street could be mitigated through a programme of historic building recording, comprising a photographic survey in line with an Historic England Level 2 building survey.
