Abstract/Summary

Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey in 2016 of several areas covering approximately 11 hectares on agricultural land to the south and west of Poynton, Cheshire, to inform an Environmental Statement about the archaeological potential of land proposed for the development of a 3km relief road. The survey has not identified any anomalies of obvious archaeological potential although a cluster of anomalies identified in the vicinity of a bowl barrow (Scheduled Monument 1007379) have been ascribed some archaeological potential. There is no indication from any other source to suggest that the magnetic data provides anything other than an accurate representation of the sub-surface conditions within the survey area. Therefore, based solely on the results and interpretation of the data, the archaeological potential of the road corridor is considered to be low, and moderate in the vicinity of the bowl barrow.
