Abstract/Summary

Four trial pits were excavated and the results have demonstrated that, over much of the site, post-medieval soil layers, extending to depths of over 2.75m below ground level, provide a thick, protective cushion over any surviving earlier archaeology. But, in the higher, northern part of the site, the results have demonstrated clearly that very important features and deposits associated with the Roman fortress’s early defences survive at a shallow depth.
