Abstract/Summary

Geophysical survey undertaken in February 2016 in support of a planning application to re-develop The University of Law, Chester, Christleton Campus, Christleton. The survey investigated the archaeological potential of three areas of open ground within the development boundary (Areas 1, 2 and 3). The magnetometer survey was successful in Area 1 (open space and playing field) and Area 2 (walled garden), obtaining results demonstrating previous use of the site and geological features. Area 3 proved too small to produce meaningful results. However, in Area 1 the results obtained mostly related to modern services and activity, although ridge and furrow was recorded across the area, along with a ditch close to the northern boundary and a second ditch or trackway close to the southern boundary. The results in Area 2 related to previous use of the walled garden with responses reflecting the postion of former buildings adjacent to the walls. It also produced evidence for ridge and furrow, aligned north-south, pre-dating the walled garden.
