Abstract/Summary

A geophysical survey was undertaken in July 2015 as part of a programme of archaeological evaluation for an area of land proposed for development and currently used as largely as pasture. It is bounded to the east by the A483 Wrexham Road and to the west by fields with Rowcliffe Avenue beyond. Conditions were generally suitable for survey, although some areas under barley or maize crops, and others which were overgrown, could not be accessed. The moat of a scheduled site was identified, along with anomalies of possible archaeological interest within the moat, potentially indicating buried building remains. However, no other anomalies likely to be of archaeological origin were detected. Several former field boundaries were recorded, and past ridge and furrow cultivation is visible in the northern-most survey blocks; more recent ploughing activity is also in evidence. Weaker anomalies classified as of an uncertain origin have also been recorded and are likely to represent natural variations or agricultural features, although an archaeological origin for some of these anomalies cannot be ruled out. Pipes and disturbance of probable modern origin were also detected.
