Abstract/Summary

A desk-based assessment was undertaken in September 2008 for a small structure originally identified as a fisherman's hut on the north bank of Bollinhurst Impounding Reservoir, Cockhead, near Disley, Cheshire. The reservoir is situated on the north-east fringes of Lyme Park. The work was carried out in advance of a proposed scheme of improvements to the reservoir which may include the demolition of the hut. The research concluded that the hut is not of great antiquity, only being built during the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. It would appear that, rather than being a fisherman's hut, it is associated with the construction of the reservoir, serving as housing for the valve shaft of the overflow system and also probably functioning as an office for maintenance staff.
