Abstract/Summary
Desk-based assessment undertaken to determine the archaeological and historical background of a site at Grosvenor Park Road, Chester, formerly the site of the Deva Garage, prior to the development of a hotel and restaurant. The report discusses the results of previous archaeological evaluation work undertaken on the site in 2000-2. This work determined that the modern overburden extends to a depth of 0.4-0.5m below ground level, it also recorded Roman domestic activity at a depth between circa 1.3 to 1.8m, so the proposed depths of disturbance of this development at average depths between 1.13, 1.28 and 1.43m could potentially impact Roman layers. Previous work also identified post medieval deposits including some associated with the tanning industry and domestic dumping dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The location of petrol tanks, relating to the former garage, were also identified. These had, in effect, 'voided' the archaeology, therefore, it is anticipated that archaeological mitigation could be limited to the footprint of the development which does not coincide with the site of the petrol tanks.
