Abstract/Summary

Following on from a desk-based assessment (ECH 5875), geophysical survey was undertaken in March 2017 on land to the east of Wistaston Road, Wistaston, Crewe, prior to a proposed residential development. The proposed development land totals some 7 hectares, 5 of which were available for survey. At the time of survey, the ground cover consisted of pasture and overgrown scrub, with undulating topography. Possible archaeological responses were recorded within the magnetic survey in the form of semi-circular trends, however, these are magnetically weak and could be caused by agricultural activity. Ploughing trends associated with ridge and furrow cultivation were also evdience along with former field boundaries. Service pipes along with magnetic disturbance, some of which could be associated with former buildings and a track were also detected. However, the overall results of the survey indicated the archaeological potential of the site to be low.
