Abstract/Summary
Archaeolgical evaluation undertaken in October 2000 in advance of a proposed residential development at 27 Grosvenor Park Road, the site of the former Deva Garage. Four trial trenches were excavated, the locations of which were determined in order to evaluate the areas of the site impacted by the new development and also to avoid the area of the petrol storage tanks.
Results of the evaluation demonstrate that the top of archaeological deposits survive on the site at a depth of 0.4-0.5m below current ground level. The archaeology encountered comprises post medieval features and artefacts (from the mid 17th century onwards), although earlier deposits may survive at greater depth. The evaluation also indicates that the current garage forecourt (circa 30% of the site) is devoid of archaeological deposits due to the presence of petrol storage tanks and associated pipes. Furthermore, in Trench 3, in the area closest to Foregate Street an inspection pit was discovered indicating the presence of an earlier garage fronting onto Foregate Street which may have affected survival of archaeological deposits in this area.
