Abstract/Summary

Earthworks Archaeology was commissioned by Abbey Gate College, Saighton to undertake an archaeological watching brief during ground works associated with the construction of a new sports pavilion and associated car park. In order to expediate the process, seven test pits were machine excavated on 19th January 2016 within the location of the proposed pavilion structure and car park. Where possible these were excavated down to the level of the underlying natural geology. The test pits identified the fills to both a former pond and a field boundary ditch. Post medieval agricultural soils were also encountered. No features, deposits or finds of archaeological significance were encountered and the potential for the survival of any archaeology pre-dating the late post medieval period was considered very low.
