Abstract/Summary

Archaeological watching brief undertaken between October and December 2015 during the removal of foundations of a previously demolished building and roads prior to the construction of an AD/MBT facility at Lostock Gralam, Northwich. Part of the site contained the remains of a 19th century bleaching works and because of this there were areas of the site which were contaminated, appropriate measures for recording were sometimes necessary such as photographing features from a safe distance. Northwich was the site of a large Roman settlement with an auxiliary fort located on the west bank of the River Weaver. Additionally the Roman roads Watling Street (linking Chester and York via Manchester), also King Street (linking Sandbach and Warrington) potentially lie close to this site. However, apart from a 19th century brick culvert relating to the former bleach works, no archaeological remains were recorded and no finds recovered.
