Source/Archive record SCH7880 - The Tannery, Cherry Lane, Lymm: Photographic Survey

Photographic survey, compiled by the owners, for The Tannery, Cherry Lane, Lymm WA13 0ST as part of a condition attached to a planning application submitted for re-development of the site to include barn conversion and construction of new coach house-style dwelling. These structures appear to form part of the tannery which existed on the site in the 19th century. The site is depicted on maps of this period, in particular, the OS 25” first edition map (c 1880) shows a typical complex of tanning pits across much of the area. The dwelling at the north-east corner of the plot and the barn in the north-west corner are also shown and appear to be on much the same footprint as the existing buildings. This complex of buildings appears to represent a short-lived rural tannery which operated at some point in the period between 1840 and 1900 and is a type of site not uncommonly seen in Cheshire, although its foundation may have been stimulated by the tanning industry in Warrington. It is included in the Cheshire Historic Environment Record (CHER 4254).
