Source/Archive record SCH7879 - Land off School Lane, Guilden Sutton, Cheshire: Archaeological Surveys and Strip, Map and Sample Excavation

In November 2014 Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned to undertake topographic and metal detector surveys at land off School Lane, Guilden Sutton, Cheshire. In February 2015 they were further commissioned to undertake a strip, map and sample for the same area. The site measures c.5217m squared and lies on the northern side of the modern settlement of Guilden Sutton. It borders the north-west side of the historic core of the village. The topographic survey identified a slight northwards rise from the south of the site for around 6m. The earliest find from the metal detector survey was a Roman weight. Other significant finds include a cast iron cannonball from the period of the First English Civil War. Chester was besieged by Parliamentarian forces between February 1645 and January 1646, with the only battle occurring at Rowton Heath in September 1645, c.3.8km south of the proposed development. Other finds retrieved can be characterised as agricultural in nature such as nails, ploughs and metal fittings. The strip, map and sample exercise confirmed that there were no significant below ground features within the development area.
