Abstract/Summary
Planning permission was granted for change of use of land to the north of Barry's Wood, Blakemere, to a caravan and camping site with associated buildings and amenity block. As a condition of planning an archaeological watching brief was undertaken in July 2014 on the groundworks of the development.
Historic research places the site within the ancient forests of Mara and Mondrem which were cleared in the Post Medieval period. The land that the site occupies does not appear to have ever been developed and during the groundworks no archaeological features were encountered. The stratigraphy showed a layer of topsoil, below which was a natural sand; this overlay a natural clay deposit. A peat deposit was also encountered on the boundary to Barry's Wood.
