Abstract/Summary

Heritage appraisal produced by Oxford Archaeology North on behalf of Red Apple Design Ltd for Whittle Hall Farm, Great Sankey, prior to proposed redevelopment of the site potentially comprising demolition of the buildings (farmhouse, associated cottage and barn). The results of the appraisal conclude that the buildings are of moderate heritage significance at a local level. The origins of Whittle Hall are not clear although it seems likely that the site was occupied in the late medieval period and was possibly enclosed by a moat. There is little physical evidence for a moat although a boundary ditch forming the western side of the site is unusually wide. Any surviving below-ground remains that could elucidate the early origins and development of the site would be of local or regional significance.
