Abstract/Summary

A watching brief was undertaken in 2013 during the construction of post pits and new picnic area at Barrow Old Hall scheduled moated site to ensure no significant below ground disturbance took place. The post pits were excavated archaeologically. No deposits containing any finds later than the 19th century were observed. The pits were cut to a depth of c.50cm and demonstrated that little impact to archaeological deposits on the western arm of the moat likely to occur. Ground reduction of the picnic area revelealed deposits dating no later than the 20th century. The character of the deposits suggests the dumping and spreading of material to the outside of the south-west corner of the moated site. The surface of the bridge was stripped and found to have a cobbled surface of probable 19th century date; this surface was preserved in situ. The bridge is dated 1812.
