Abstract/Summary
Report on archaeological evaluation on the site of a proposed residential/ retail development. Evaluation consisted of the excavation of 4 trial trenches. The results have shown that a cut feature, probably part of a 17th century ditch associated with Civil War defences built around the north and east sides of the city, runs through the northen half of the site. Finds retrieved from the fills of the feature include pottery and leather shoe remains. The conditions within the ditch have allowed the survival of organic material. The character of the upper ditch fills and finds suggest that the site may lie close to a former bastion, a fortlet/ watchtower associated with the line of Civil War defences.
