Abstract/Summary
This report contains the results of a programme of archaeological test pitting undertaken during February and March 2014 at Norton Priory, Runcorn (centring on NGR SJ 5485 8310). Twenty-five small test pits were hand-excavated in the grounds that surround the monastic ruins. Five pits - positioned close to the exposed Priory remains but outside the areas previously excavated in the 1970s and 80s - produced results that suggest the presence of significant archaeology. The archaeology recorded within the five pits included sandstone surfaces of indeterminate date, with a possible medieval grave cut identified in test pit 6. Finds retrieved included fragments of medieval floor tile and pottery.
The results of this exercise allow the identification of key, sensitive areas where below-ground significant archaeology is likely to survive. This information will assist in the implementation of mitigation measures to ensure no damage to underlying deposits occurs during future activities.
